Good kitchen gadgets earn their place by saving you time every day, not by sitting in a drawer. Here’s how to pick the right ones for a Pakistani kitchen.
If you bake, or want your biryani to taste the same every time, a digital kitchen scale is the first gadget to buy. The round SF-400 is a simple, slim scale for everyday cooking. The SF-400A adds a backlit screen, a bigger square plate and piece counting, which suits home bakers and small sellers. For baking powder, yeast and salt, a set of measuring spoons is more reliable than a teaspoon from the cutlery drawer.
Choose by how you cook:
Whichever you choose, give every jar its own spoon so flavours don’t mix, and fill jars only with dry spoons.
A small fruit knife covers peeling, salad and fruit chaat. If you’re setting up a new kitchen or buying a gift, a full knife set with scissors, a peeler and a sharpening steel covers chopping, bread and meat too. For grating, a flat kaddu kash is light and quick to rinse, while a four-sided box grater with a container catches everything and stores it in the fridge.
Steel spoons scratch non-stick pans. Use nylon or silicone tools, such as a spoon set with a stand, a silicone spatula and an oil brush for parathas and baking. A steamer stand turns any deep pot into a steamer for momos, fish and vegetables.
Tip: start with the gadgets you’ll use every day (a scale, a good knife and non-stick spoons) and add the rest as your cooking grows.
For everyday cooking and baking, the round SF-400 is enough. Choose the SF-400A if you want a backlit screen, a bigger square plate and piece counting for shop or parcel work.
Yes. The cooking spoon set has nylon heads, and the spatula and oil brush are silicone. Both are made for non-stick cookware.
A kaddu kash is flat, light and quick to rinse. A box grater has four sides and, in our set, a container that catches and stores what you grate.
If you like jars you can see from the stove, take the six-jar rack, which can also hang on the wall. If you want spices out of sight with drawers for sachets, take the masala box rack.
A knife set on a rotating stand or a non-stick spoon set with its stand. Both are used every day and look good on the counter.
